Editor's note:

For some reason, "Mochi-Throwing Event" is very popular around these parts. One of the reason is because the tohoku region of Japan is known for having some of the most highest quality of rice. Of course, regualr rice and mochi-rice are slightly different, the mochi culture has been relatively prevalent in these parts. So much so that almost every household will have a mochi rice cooker or have their own unique recipe when eating their rice.

Another reason to why this event is popular is because the ceremonial act of throwing mochi is actually often used to celebrate a "new start." In the past when one builds a new home the owner of the house will climb to the roof and throw mochi in all directions for a bright future.

Now the last reason, which I honestly think is the real reason **cough cough**, is the fact that during this mochi-throwing event held during festivals, has a "winning mochi." Within the mochis that are thrown there are some which have markings/stickers on the wrapper which show that you have won a prize. Although the level of prize can differ, I will say that it is at least 10-times better than what you will win at the stamp ralley. Or rather, the probability of winning a higher rank prize is greater compared to the stamp ralley prize.

Yes, there was a reason to why the elderlies during the mochi-throwing event go frantic for these mochis, and so much so that they will snatch a mochi from the lap of the foreigner next to them... Really, I kid you not...
