Pacific Saury ~ サンマ ( Sanma ) ~

Pacific Saury, also known as Sanma in Japanese, are one of many specialties of Ofunato!!

Ofunato boasts the highest amount of Pacific Sauries catches in a year in all of mainland Japan, and they also hold the world record for longest line of edible fish, made of pacific sauries!

Scallops ~ホタテ ( Hotate )

Ofunato is know to be the origin for a special way of farming Scallops.

The Mimi-zuri, or ear hooking, consists of stringing up 30+ scallops  from a float in the ocean so that it is easier for the scallops to feed on planktons which reside in the higher half of the ocean.

Seaweed ~ワカメ ( Wakame ) 

Ofunato is named for another farming/cultivation method and this one is for seaweed, or wakame. 

Raw seaweed is a specialty amongst the port towns in the Sanriku Coast, but it is said that the roots of cultivation and commercializing was brought about by a fishermen in Ofunato.

Camellia Flowers ~ツバキ ( Tsubaki ) ~

Camellias, the city's official flower, is a flower that blooms in early to late spring. The origin of the city's mascot is camellia and it is also used in the city's logo mark. During spring, the city overflows with camellia in every corner, but you can also find them growing yearly at the World's Camellia Museum, Goishi.

Kamome no Tamago ~かもめの玉子~

Kamome no Tamago, directly translated as Black-tailed Gull's Egg, is a popular confectionery created in Ofunato by SAITO SEIKA Co., Ltd.

The rich yet crisp flavor in addition to its unique shape is known by people all of Japan, and is definitely a souvenir liked by everyone.
